Beschrijving

This book presents to the modern reader the only known sixteenth-century collection of Dutch language proverbs to provide explanations of its adages. Published in 1550, at the height of a frenzied period of proverb book compilation and publication in the Low Countries, Symon Andriessoon's Duytsche adagia ofte spreeckwoorden is a unique resource of interest not only to paroemiologists, but also to scholars of Dutch philology, history and culture. In order to provide the fullest possible access to this important source, Andriesson's book is presented in a series of formats: a facsimile reproduction of the original; a diplomatic transcription with philological annotations to modern Dutch; and an English translation, also annotated. The text is then framed by a corresponding interpretative apparatus: an introduction on proverb scholarship in the Netherlands; information concerning Symon Andriessoon; a philological commentary; and Dutch and English indices.
