Medical Science: Treat the causes of disease! Does medical science make mistakes and fail? Suppose rather that medical science finds itself in crisis and at a dead end as a consequence of pharmacotherapeutical and symptom orientated thinking for virtually all known diseases. On top of that we have a regular arrival of new and vague scientific promises which never lead to successful treatment but making diseases chronic. Do we have the worlds best health system? Only using drugs to treat the symptoms of disease, which counts for around 95% of all cases, has meanwhile resulted in 8.4 million (one in two) people in The Netherlands with a chronic disease. We are sicker than ever! It’s all too easy and wrong to point the finger at the ageing of the population. No, the causes of disease are not yet known to medical science. In The Netherlands we record the types of epidemiology in rough figures: 1 million people with heart and vascular disease, 1 million with migraine, 1 million with diabetes, 1 million with osteoporosis, 800,000 with depression and 350,000 with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, etcetera. And of all these chronic diseases symptoms are treated and therefore the cost of healthcare becomes less affordable. Paradigm Exchange If the causes of disease are known, then why only treat the symptoms? New biochemical theories stand ready and in the biochemical approach to disease, can the cause be highlighted and treated with inexpensive non- toxic bodily substances. The applications are mostly unpatented and aren’t considered economically viable. It can’t be denied that in the medical world, regular conventional, biochemical and pure scientific thinking are accepted, that the causes of disease and their treatment are given an appropriate biochemical treatment. The approach must be widened. A paradigm change tackles the failings of the healthcare system at their very core. The causes of disease and their treatment leads to more appropriate care, to a healthier population which is in a much better shape to work longer and this leads to a reduction in sick days with a lowering cost to the economy. [It costs one billion euros in The Netherlands and €27 billion in Europe through working days lost due to migraine.] Causes In “Cause and Therapy in Medicine” produced in essay form, except for the immunological treatment of cancer, the causes and treatments described for amongst others: migraine, heart infarction, high cholesterol, osteoporosis and depression. The described theories are directly testable for universities or independent institutes. Application of these therapies don’t have to be long-winded procedures over a period of many years; it’s about the body’s own substances after all. There is a chance for medical science to take “with a clear statement of intent and a pioneering new vision” [Trouw, 3rd February 2014] to choose a very promising direction. Above all this means once again healthy people who feel grateful and a society freed from crippling and unreasonable costs to the health care system. And the motto: not the industry and the doctor, but the doctor and the patient determine together what is for the best.
